Sefardi haredi ‘kabbalist’-to-the-stars Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto has agreed to plead guilty and to testify against former police Major Geneneral Menashe Arbiv in exchange for a receiving a reduced sentence, Globes and other Israeli media are reporting.
Under the terms of the plea bargain, Pinto will will admit to trying to bribe former police Fraud Unit head Brigadier General Ephraim Bracha and to obstruction of justice.
In exchange for those admissions and his testimony against Arbiv, the prosecution will ask that Pinto receive a reduced sentence of only one year in jail time – far less than otherwise would be the case. Many observers question the plea deal with Pinto – which was first leaked to the media months ago – on several grounds, including the fact the the attempted bribery of Bracha by Pinto and his wife was recorded, and on police and the attorney general’s seemingly bizarre dealings with Arbiv, who has long claimed to have definitive proof that Pinto is lying in order to smear him. Instead of looking at that evidence, however, the AG and police first opted to polygraph Pinto and to try to make the deal with him and allegedly gave Arbiv’s evidence a much less strenuous examination.
People who are truly delusional and people who have been trained can fool polygraph examiners.
Pinto’s wife was recorded by police handing over 100,000 Swiss francs in cash to Bracha’s wife as payment for information on a criminal case about Pinto’s Hazon Yeshaya charity, which had been caught stealing millions of dollars in food donations and other funds earmarked for elderly Holocaust survivors. The food was sold on Israel’s black market and the cash from those sales and from the other stolen money was allegedly taken by Pinto and top charity officials for their personal use.
Both Bracha and his wife were cooperating with the ongoing police investigation into Pinto, and Mrs. Bracha wore a wire during the cash handoff.
Pinto's wife has tried to commit suicide at least twice since she and her husband were arrested and wandered off from her family two months ago and was feared kidnapped, but was instead found by police, apparently incoherent.
Arviv allegedly took bribes from Pinto. He is now expected to be questioned by police under caution already in the next several days.
Pinto’s plea bargain must be approved by the court.
Various Israeli media is also reporting that Pinto has hired noted criminal defense attorney Alan Dershowitz, which may mean that rumored US criminal charges against Pinto from alleged fraud and possibly for alleged extortion may be filed.
