Interpol worked with the Israel Police over a period of several months to track down a 55-year-old divorced haredi man who is “suspected of serious crimes allegedly perpetrated against one of his children,” Yeshiva World reported.
The man was finally arrested in Ben Gurion International Airport last week as he was reportedly heading back to New York. He told police he was in Israel sitting shiva for his mother who had recently passed away and was not fleeing justice in the US.
At a hearing, the haredi man’s ex-wife reportedly insisted the claims made by her daughter against her ex-husband “are as far from the truth as the east is from the west.”
The haredi man’s defense attorney, Nadav Gedalyahu, reportedly told the court that even if the daughter’s allegations are true, the alleged crime(s) took place 17 years ago and the statute of limitations has elapsed.
However, the Israeli court reportedly remanded the haredi man to custody until the results of a polygraph exam he took are made available.
The haredi man’s attorney lashed out his client’s arrest and at the alleged victim.
“The allegations are absurd as the daughter alleges something occurred 17 years ago in New York. The young lady has known psychological issues as well as being divorced twice and getting into difficulties with family members. This is an attempt to extort money from the suspect and we are certain he will be released when the truth surfaces,” the attorney, Nadav Gedalyahu, reportedly told the haredi news website Kikar HaShabbat.
