Chabad’s emissary to Nepal, Rabbi Chezki Lipschitz, was arrested just before Rosh Hashana and jailed, Israeli media sources, including the Times of Israel, and Chabad’s website reported.
Lipschitz was jailed in Kathmandu over what was allegedly a clerical error related to his visa.
Lipschitz spent the first day and a half of Rosh Hashana in jail, but was released Friday after Chabad got the Israeli and US embassies to intervene.
Thousands of young Israelis travel to Nepal every year to backpack, and Chabad makes what is said to be the largest Passover seder in the world to accommodate them. It also has High Holiday services and meals that can serve hundreds.
Chabad yeshiva students in Nepal to assist Lipschitz for the High Holidays were able to hold the services uninterrupted.
