Ynet reports that the arrests of nine haredi rioters at last Sunday’s violent protest against the draft of haredi yeshiva students and against the arrest and imprisonment of a haredi draft-dodger were carried out in what is supposed to be an unusual way for Israeli police – through undercover police officers dressed as haredim and dispersed throughout the rioting crowd.
The protest was reportedly especially violent. Haredim stoned police, called them Nazis and burned garbage dumpsters.
Water cannon and mounted police had to be used to disperse the crowd.
In a video of the protest, the undercover cops are seen wearing white shirts, yarmulkes and tzitzit (ritual fringes).
When they tried to arrest a haredi man who set a trash dumpster on fire, he resisted arrest. One of the undercover cops pushed him down to the ground, sparking a small riot by haredim trying to stop the arrest.
After the demonstration, some of the haredi protesters said they weren't surprised by the undercover cops.
"They are present at every rally. We know they are in disguise because of the small changes [from the norm] in the way they are dressed, they also touch their Yarmulkes and tzitzit a lot," one of the haredi demonstrators reportedly said.
