Prosecutors say they are considering charging Chief Rabbi of Holon Rabbi Avraham Yosef with breach of public trust and fraud charges, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Tel Aviv District Attorney’s office has reportedly told Yosef the charges are likely to be filed, although reportedly not until after a hearing takes place.
In April, police recommended that Yosef be indicted.
Yosef is the son of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the founder and spiritual leader of the Sefardi haredi Shas Party and former Chief Rabbi of Israel. The younger Yosef was a candidate for the chief rabbi position until details of the fraud and breech of public trust allegation became public early this year. Even so, he sits on the Chief Rabbis’ governing council. His brother Yitzhak was elected Sefardi Chief Rabbi of Israel earlier this year in his place.
Avraham Yosef allegedly coerced local businesses to pay for the kosher supervision of Badatz Beit Yosef– a private haredi kosher supervision agency owned by the Yosef family and managed by his youngest brother. Yosef also allegedly discriminated against other private kosher supervision agencies to benefit his family’s Badatz Beit Yosef.
