Malka Leifer, a former principal of the Adass haredi school in Melbourne, was arrested today in Israel and is awaiting extradition to Australia, Ynet’s Hebrew language website reported today.
Israel’s State Attorney's International Department filed the extradition request in Jerusalem District Court.
Leifer fled Australia when the abuse allegations against her surfaced in 2008 and has been living openly in the haredi town of Emmanuel ever since.
Leifer allegedly groomed and seduced several female teenage students and has apparently been charged in Australia with 47 counts of indecent assault, 13 counts of indecent assault against a minor, 11 counts of rape and three other offenses.
Leifer was born in Israel and has dual citizenship.
She was a teacher and then principal of the Adass school from 2001 until she fled the country in 2008.
Among her alleged victims are three sisters.
One of the things Leifer allegedly did to try to silence her alleged victims was to threaten that if they exposed her, she would out them as lesbians and ruin any chances they might otherwise have had to marry within the community.
The state want’s Leifer to held in custody until extradition proceedings are completed due to her alleged risk of flight.
Leifer is married and has children of her own.
