The AP reports:
Authorities say a man who fled to Israel shortly after his April 2008 indictment on hate crime charges has been returned and arraigned in New York.
Brooklyn prosecutors say Yitzchak Shuchat pleaded not guilty Friday to second-degree assault as a hate crime, attempted assault and other charges.
Bail was set at $300,000. His attorney didn't return a message.
Prosecutors say the Orthodox Jewish defendant beat 21-year-old Andrew Charles with a baton and tried to beat his friend in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The alleged victims are black.
U.S. marshals brought Shuchat to New York on Thursday.
Shuchat surrendered his passport and a judge issued orders of protection for Charles, his friend and witnesses.
Authorities say he went to Israel via Canada.
Here's an Israeli report published yesterday on Shuchat's extradition.
Much of Chabad in Crown Heights and in Israel rallied behind Shuchat and tried to block his extradition as did New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind.
