The majority of Town of Monroe, New York’s elected leaders want to split from the Satmar hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel in return for Kiryas Joel giving Monroe complete control over Kiryas Joel’s controversial expansion plan, News 12 reported.
In New York State, incorporated villages are often located inside incorporated towns, as is the case with Kiryas Joel and Monroe.
Kiryas Joel, which is the poorest incorporated entity in the entire United States, intends to double its size, and it needs to get just over 500 acres of land from Monroe to do it.
Kiryas Joel’s population growth is not coming from new residents moving to the village. Instead, it’s coming from the extremely high birth rate of the village’s hasidic residents.
The proposal to separate from Kiryas Joel, came to light at a Monroe town council meeting after a member of the audience asked about a rumor he had heard from a resident of Kiryas Joel during the public comments portion of the meeting.
Three of four Monroe board members said separation interests of both communities. The fourth, Councilman Dan McQuade, asked for a public hearing with Kiryas Joel officials to be held first.
