The three right wing Jews who admitted to kidnapping and murdering a 16-year-old Arab boy, Mohammed Abu Khdeir, two weeks ago in Jerusalem are all planning on pleading temporary insanity, Ha’aretz reported.
The three, all males, one 30-year-old adult and two 16-year-old boys, are in Petah Tikva Magistrate’s Court this morning to have their detention extended.
“They live at the fringe of society and aren’t functioning individuals,” a source close to both minors claimed.
Police reportedly plan on declaring their intent to prosecute the three and will ask that the detention of all three be extended until Friday to give time for an indictment to be filed. Then, on Friday police will likely ask the court to hold all three in custody until the end of legal proceedings against them.
Last week, Mohammed Abu Khbeir’s father Hussein was asked by Ha’aretz if he had faith in Israel’s legal system. He said he didn’t and explained what he thought that legal system would do.
“I don’t trust them. Not in the least. I am afraid. I am really afraid. I think they will say that [the murderers] were insane and give them a year or two and that’s all,” Hussein Abu Khbeir said.
The three suspects still in custody admitted kidnapping and killing Mohammed – who looked much more like an 11-year-old than a 16-year-old. They reenacted the kidnapping and murder for police and the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service.
Although Mohammed had been hit on the head, he was still alive when his body was set on fire and he burned alive.
Three other suspects were released late last week even though they were allegedly part of the cell that kidnapped and murdered Mohammed. But because they allegedly played no active role in the kidnapping and murder, they were released to house arrest.
All or most of the six suspects are reportedly haredim or ex-haredim.
