A 20-year-old Israeli soldier, Eitan Barak from Herzeliya, has been killed and several other IDF soldiers were wounded in Gaza Strip fighting overnight, Ha’aretz reported.
This is Israel’s first military death in this latest conflict with Hamas and other radical Islamic organizations in Gaza that began 11 days ago, and the first since Israel launched a ground incursion into Gaza at 10:00 pm Thursday night.
The soldier, who seems to have been killed by light arms fire, was evacuated by helicopter to the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, where he was pronounced dead.
The IDF is reportedly investigating whether the soldier was killed by friendly fire.
The IDF reportedly says that it killed 14 Islamic militants overnight. Most of them were killed when Israel air force planes bombed Hamas rocket launchers.
On Wednesday a civilian, 37-year-old Dror Khenin, was killed by mortar shell fired from Gaza. Khenin and another volunteer were delivering food and water to IDF troops near the Erez Crossing when the shell hit. The other volunteer, a 44-year-old man, was wounded and is hospitalized.
