New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo gave $10.9 million dollars in grants to nonprofits in the state to fund after school programs.
“By funding these afterschool programs, we are ensuring that children in communities across the State have access to learning opportunities and cultural exposure that will further their development for years to come. Our administration is focused on providing exceptional learning environments to students, from Pre-K through college, and supporting exercises that are proven to enhance their learning experience is the right thing to do. After school programs play a major role in enriching the lives of children, and this funding to Advantage After School Programs is a wise investment for New York’s future,” Cuomo said in a press release.
Among the programs funded is the Community Improvement Council, Inc., located in the all-Skvere hasidic Village of New Square. It received $195,000.
What Cuomo does not acknowledge is that the money will likely be used to pay for child care for hasidim who otherwise do not qualify for state aide.
All New Square schools are hasidic. All teach only in Yiddish and secular subjects are rarely taught, if ever, and these schools do not follow New York State’s education law – which the governor (and, to be fair, previous governors) have failed to enforce.
These hasidic schools remain in session until late in the day – and, as students grow older, into the late evening.
New Square bloc votes and has delivered vote totals in excess of 97% for politicians chosen by the Skvere Rebbe Rabbi David Twersky, who runs New Square like his personal fiefdom. Dissidents have been rooted out, ostracized, threatened, attacked and, in one case, almost burned alive by Skvere activists.
