Two 20-year-old Palestinian men were reportedly assaulted in Jerusalem Friday night by a gang of right-wing Jews wielding iron bars and clubs.
Both men, Amir Shwiki and Samer Mahfouz, were seriously injured and are hospitalized in Hadassah University Hospital Ein Karem, Ha’aretz reported.
Shwiki and Mahfouz, both from Beit Khanina, were reportedly walking to a light rail station after the Ramadan dinner to look for Shwiki's worker ID when they were attacked.
"A man came from the direction of [the Jerusalem neighborhood of] Neve Ya'akov. He said give me a cigarette. I told him I don't have any, and he heard I'm Arab and went away, coming back with his friends, maybe 12 people. They had sticks and iron bars and they hit us over the head," Mahfouz told Haaretz.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel, who spoke with both victims, say the by Jewish mob, armed with iron bars and baseball bats, beat both Palestinians two until they lost consciousness. Police officers who arrived at the scene allegedly did not call an ambulance. So passersby took the two victims to a clinic in Beit Khanina for treatment. Both victims were taken from there to Hadassah University Hospital Ein Karem in serious condition.
Jerusalem police told Ha’aretz an investigation has been opened.
"Yesterday a woman called and said she noticed two minorities and several Jews in the area and heard shouts and understood there was an attack. A police cruiser arrived and called an ambulance, but the family refused to wait for the ambulance and evacuated them independently,” police said in a statement.
There have been dozens of attacks and attempted attacks against Arabs in Jerusalem since the kidnapping and murder in June of three Zionist Orthodox teens on the West Bank, including the kidnapping and gruesome murder of 16-year-old Muhammed Abu Khbeir, who was targeted by a right wing thugs who burned the Arab boy alive because he looked much younger than 16 and was vulnerable.
Other than Abu Khbeir’s murder, which caused an international outcry, police have done little to stem right wing violence in Jerusalem or elsewhere in the country.
Right wing gangs have also targeted left wing anti-war protesters, who now need to travel in groups to stay safe. Left wing Jews accuse police of turing a near-blind eye to the right wing violence against them.
