Two Israeli soldiers were killed and four others wounded after Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel from Gaza and opened fire on them, Ha’aretz reported.
Dead are 20-year-old Sergeant Adar Bersano and 45-year-old Major Amotz Greenberg (res).
Greenberg was a father of three children. A lawyer, he worked as an investigator for the Israel Securities Authority.
The ISA’s chairman, Professor Shumel Hauser, called Greenberg ”a dear friend” and “salt of the earth.”
“We've lost a dear friend, a loving family man, salt of the earth guy, killed in action against terrorists in the defense of Israel. We'll remember him forever," Hauser said.
Bersano is survived by his parents, two younger siblings and may friends who called him a hero.
Four or five armed Gazans breached Israel’s border near the Israeli town of Kissufim, and attacked an IDF unit by firing machine guns and an anti-tank missile.
One of the Gazans was killed in the initial firefight and the remaining Gazans fled.
The military arm of Hamas, the Izz a-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement 12 of its fighters infiltrated Israel. It says the 12 staged four ambushes inside Israel over a span of six hours and brought back M-16 assault rifles they captured.
The IDF believes the Gazans intended to carry out a major terror attack on Israeli civilians.
