The town of Mamakating, New York’s planning board approved the controversial mikva (ritual bath) at 51 Winterton Road meant to serve Modern Orthodox developer Shalom Lamm’s 396-unit townhouse development, the Times Herald Record reported.
That development, despite many of Lamm’s previous protestations to the contrary, will be a new Satmar hasidic shtetl.
Lamm’s development – originally pitched to officials of the tiny 400-person Village of Bloomingburg where it is located through front man as a retirement-vacation home complex that was supposed to include a golf course and draw buyers from all religious and ethnic groups – will turn Bloomingburg into a new Satmar-controlled village.
Work on the mikvah was stopped in January after Mamakating issued a stop-work order when it discovered the mikvah was being constructed without permits.
Lamm is currently under FBI investigation and many of his Bloomingburg properties were raided by the FBI several months ago.
Lamm, his family and dozens of Satmar hasidim were also strongly chastised by a state judge after they tried to commit massive voter fraud in Bloomingburg’s local election.
Among many other irregularities, Lamm’s daughter and son-in-law flew in from Israel and tried to vote in the election even though neither had ever lived in Bloomingburg.
Similar behavior by the Satmar hasidim, most of whom lived in Brooklyn or Kiryas Joel but used the addresses of several of Lamm’s building to try to claim local residency, also took place, and Lamm himself tried to vote – even though he declared his legal residence to be in West Hempstead, New York, many miles away from Bloomingburg, in a court document filed at the end of December.
Last year, the Satmar Zalman faction also advertized and promoted the development in its mouthpiece Yiddish-language newspaper as a new Satmar-only hasidic shtetl, Kiryas Yated Lev, and offered units for pre-sale, apparently violating US Fair Housing Law.
And earlier this year before the election, a Satmar rabbi affiliated with that faction also offered hasidim money to move to Lamm-owned houses and apartments in the tiny upstate New York village in order to establish facts on the ground – i.e., to dramatically change the voting composition of the 400 population Village of Bloomingburg and take it over.
