And now it appears police lied to cover up their own failure.
Ha’aretz reported at 7:04 pm IDT tonight that a civilian source, who heard the recording of the phone call made by one of the three Zionist Orthodox teenage boys kidnapped Thursday night in the West Bank to the police emergency hotline moments after the kidnapping began, insists the call was clear and comprehensible – despite police claims to the contrary.
The teen who made the call spoke quickly and in a whisper, but his words were clear and comprehensible, the source reportedly said.
According to that source, when the hotline operator answers, the boy clearly says, "I have been kidnapped."
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino has set up committee to investigate police handling of the first few hours of the kidnapping.
Earlier today, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich said criticism of the police emergency hotline’s handling of the boy’s call was justified. But Aharonovich also insisted the teen's call was difficult to understand – something the civilian source who spoke with Ha’aretz says is not true.
Aharonovich also promised to release the recording of the boy’s call in the future.
Police waited almost five hours before reporting the call to the IDF to Israel’s internal security service known as the Shin Bet, or to start its own investigation into the kidnapping. It only notified the IDF and Shin Bet after one of the boy’s father came to a police station at about 3:00 Friday morning and begged police to find his son.
