Plea Deal With Orthodox Alleged Mob Boss In Rabbi Extortion Trial Draws Widespread Condemnation

Israel’s State Prosecutor gave a sweetheart plead deal to alleged mob boss Shalom Domrani today, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Domrani, who is Orthodox, allegedly controls organized crime in southern Israel.
He and his gang (many of whom are also Orthodox) allegedly used threats and extortion to try to throw the local elections in Netivot.
The Supreme Court on December 30 ruled that Domrani should be held in jail until the end of his trial.
As that trial process dragged on, Domrani agreed today plead guilty to lesser charges. He will reportedly receive only nine more months in prison on top of the five months he has already served while at trial – meaning Domrani will only serve a total of 14 months in prison.
Domrani and his men allegedly threatened Rabbi Yaakov Ifergan, known as the X-Ray Rabbi, on election day to try to get him to publicly switch his allegiance to Domrani’s chosen mayoral candidate.
Domrani was allegedly helped in the extortion by Ifergan’s rabbinic rival, Rabbi Yoram Abergil.
The prosecution was unable to make a case against Abergil but did have enough evidence to prosecute Abergil’s assistant.
The deal with Domrani is drawing widespread condemnation from anti-crime activists and has allegedly caused many to question the competency of police and state prosecutor.
