Large Protest Scheduled To Oppose New Square Slaughterhouse To Be Built In Upscale Residential Area

A large protest against a huge chicken slaughterhouse to be built in a residential area adjacent to the hasidic village of New Square, New York is scheduled for 2 pm Sunday, June 1, the Rockland Times reported.
The protest is sponsored by Preserve Rockland, a local group that has fought against public corruption and special treatment given to hasidic communities, allegedly as a result of those communities bloc voting.
The kosher slaughterhouse is planned for a vacant parcel of land on Route 45 in New Hempstead.
Local area non-hasidic residents have opposed the plans to build the slaughterhouse for years. But now actual construction looms and the urgency – and size – of the protests will reportedly increase.
The state gave a $1.6 million grant to the slaughterhouse project despite its questionable location and the damage it will do to nearby residential property values.
Protest organizers want the state to rescind that grant.
“Please join us for a public demonstration to show our support for Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski’s efforts to get a $1.6 million state grant rescinded,” a recently distributed flyer says, noting that the grant was approved “despite the fact that the chicken slaughterhouse project has not received (needed) approvals from the Rockland County or Ramapo Planning Departments.…State tax dollars should not be used to build a slaughterhouse in a residential area to produce kosher poultry for members of the Skverer Hasidic sect.…New Square is part of the Town of Ramapo, which has some jurisdiction over New Square. (Yet) New Square is also an incorporated village, which means it has the power over its zoning and municipal code and if given a state grant is likely to build the slaughterhouse despite the concerns of its neighbors,” the flyer reportedly says.
The proposed kosher slaughterhouse would have 26,000 square feet of space and would be located in a residential area less than 100 feet from neighboring upscale homes, the flyer also points out.
