Lapid: Haredi Knesset Members Admit Privately That Haredim Will Have To Serve In The IDF

Speaking to the Israel Bar Association today, Finance Minister Yair Lapid reportedly said haredi members of Knesset privately accept the fact that haredim will have to serve in the IDF, Yeshiva World reported.
Every haredi MK who meets with non-haredi Jews tells them that the government's campaign to force haredim to serve in the military will not be successful. However, when they speak between themselves it is a different story, Lapid reportedly claimed.
He also reportedly noted that the government’s agreement with the Sefardi haredi Shas Party’s Mayan Chinuch network of schools will see those schools include core subject matter such as math and English – even though Shas rabbis originally opposed this.
“[W]e now tell haredim these are our values and you will accept them,” Lapid reportedly said.
Lapid also reportedly insisted that a democratic state cannot tolerate gender segregated public buses that haredim demand.
“One of the changes brought about by the ‘equal burden’ [i.e., haredi draft] bill [law] is that the state comes and says, ‘I have decided and everyone is required to abide by my values.’ Mehadrin [gender segregated] bus lines cannot exist in a democratic state; we don’t send women to the back of the bus in 2014 because otherwise [if haredim keep illegally gender segregating public buses] the haredi sector just won’t have [public] buses [to gender segregate],” Lapid said.
