A haredi yeshiva student was allegedly verbally attacked by a young secular man in the haredi city of Bnei Brak Thursday, Yeshiva World reported.
The yeshiva student says he left his parents’ home to return to his yeshiva in Modi’in Illit. He was walking near the Geha Junction on Jabotinsky Street and trying to hitch a ride to the intercity bus stop when a car stopped to give him a ride. Once he got inside, a secular male inside the vehicle began cursing at him.
The secular man allegedly shouted, “Do you want me to drive you to the [military] induction center?”
The yeshiva student got out of the car and the secular man became even more abusive, the yeshiva student said, at one point screaming at him, “You eat and live for free!” – a reference to the large number of haredim who live off welfare and government stipends but refuse to serve in the IDF or work.
“I told him I am not bothering you and I have done nothing to you,” the yeshiva student said, but this did not stop the secular man’s insults.
Secular and non-haredi Israelis overwhelmingly serve in the IDF while almost no haredim do.
Even though the draft law was recently changed to mandate haredi haredi IDF service, the vast majority of haredim have opted to dodge the draft and haredi leaders have spent much of the past two years demonizing anyone who has tried to get haredim to serve, calling proponents of drafting haredim “anti-Semites,” ‘self-hating Jews,” and “Nazis.”
Even so, verbal attacks against haredim by seculars are exceeding rare and physical attacks have been almost non-existent.
On the other hand, the few haredim who do serve in the IDF have been harassed and attacked, verbally and physically, by haredim and police and even an elite SWAT team have had to be deployed to rescue lone haredi soldiers trapped by angry violent haredi mobs
