Three haredi men from the small Upper Galilee town of Hatzor Haglilit were assaulted Thursday night in the nearby Bedouin village of Tuba-Zangariya by a mob of Bedouins who thought they had come to burn their mosque down, Ha’aretz reported.
The three haredim – aged 29, 34 and 39 – weren't arsonists. Instead, they drove to the Bedouin village to get emergency dental care for one of the men.
After the dental appointment, they tried to exit the village but got lost. So they stopped their car to ask for directions.
Believing the men had come there to carry out a price tag hate crime, villagers surrounded the car and stoned it. After that, the car was set on fire and the haredim fled on foot toward nearby Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi.
Police found them and detained them for questioning, only releasing the three haredim after they showed police a prescription from the dentist to prove their actual reason for being in the Bedouin village.
Three Bedouin villagers, all reportedly men in their 20s, were arrested for the assault against the three haredim and the arson of their car.
In October 2011 one of the community’s three mosques was burned in a price tag hate crime alleged carried out by West Bank Jewish settlers or their sympathizers. A long string of similar price tag hate crime attacks against Muslims and Christians have been carried out since, and it was only sharp condemnation from the US State Department earlier this year,d the Pope’s visit to Israel this weekend, and recent attacks by West bank Jewish settlers against the Border Police and IDF that finally prompted Israel’s security establishment to begin to take these hate crimes seriously.
According to some reports, no one has ever been convicted in any of these price tag hate crime attacks, and most of the very small number of Jews arrested for carrying them out have been quietly released without trial.
