Two haredi Nahal Brigade combat soldiers were dismissed from their combat duties and kicked out of the haredi unit after they launched a Facebook protest in violation of IDF regulations against the evacuation of illegal Jewish settlement outposts in the West Bank, Israel HaYom reported. The pair will now be required to serve a full three years in the army, rather than the less than one-and-a-half years of active duty Nahal Haredi soldiers serve.
The pair’s protest photos reportedly read, "Nahal soldiers do not evacuate Jews," and "The 3rd Platoon Rifle Company will not evict Givat Asaf." The protest signs are next to army berets and army patches in some of the photos.
Givat Asaf is an illegal settler outpost that Israel’s High Court of Justice ordered to be razed.
Last Thursday's Facebook protest follows one late last month. Thousands of soldiers joined a protest page called "I too am with David from Nahal" in support of David Adamov, a Nahal Brigade soldier who was filmed unnecessarily and illegally cocking a weapon and pointing it at a Palestinian teenager in Hebron. Adamov was court-martialed for assaulting one of his commanders, but the soldiers who organized the protest page thought action was taken against Adamov for the gun incident.
Senior IDF staff have repeatedly said publicly and told soldiers that if they have a problem with IDF policies or with carrying out specific orders, they should speak to their commanders about it. Few, however, appear to do so.
Protest photos similar to the ones the two Nahal Brigade soldiers were punished for posting to Facebook were also posted by soldiers from other units, including the non-haredi Golani and Givati brigades, the 7th Division of the Armored Corps, and the haredi Netzah Yehuda Battalion, among others.
