Haredim Urged Not To Get Draft New Exemptions For Fear They Will Leave Yeshivas To Join Workforce

Pashkvils (announcements) and flyers have been posted and distributed in haredi neighborhoods in Jerusalem urging haredi yeshiva students not to report to IDF induction centers to receive full exemptions from military service, Ynet reported.
The new draft law allows as many as 30,000 haredi yeshiva students to be exempted from the draft in the first three years of the law’s existence, and for the first time, those exemptions are structured to allow thousands of the yeshiva students to legally enter the workforce rather than studying full time in yeshiva. Previously, to be exempt from military service a haredi man had to study in yeshiva full time. If he did not do so, his exemption was voided.
The special full exemptions that allow haredim to work are slated to begin soon and haredi leaders fear many of their yeshiva students will choose to work rather than study.
So haredi leaders want to stop young haredi men from reporting to the recruitment centers in order to receive the exemption. They also claim the yeshiva students will be brainwashed by the IDF at the recruitment centers by being shown videos and by being literature that promotes army service and mainstreaming into Israeli society.
The new pashkvils and flyers distributed during the Passover claim the new type of draft exemption is an attempt by the government to "destroy the haredi community and change its image."
The new pashkvils and flyers also claim that haredi yeshiva students reporting to the IDF induction centers to receive the new exemption will be forced to listen to hours of talks by ex-haredim who will try to convince the haredi yeshiva students to join the IDF and integrate into the labor market.
"[The government's] goal is clear – to destroy the kollels (yeshivas for married students) and close the yeshivas and remove the separating wall [between the haredi community and Israeli society],” the new pashkvils and flyers allege.
The new pashkvils and flyers are believed to have been distributed by activists linked to the non-hasidic haredi rebel faction led by Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach and by anti-Zionist haredim linked to the anti-Zionist haredi umbrella organization Edah Haredit. However, a student of Auerbach denied Auerbach or his faction were involved in the distribution of the new pashkvils and flyers.
Auerbach has consistently ordered his followers not to report to IDF induction centers when summoned, and several of his students have been jailed for draft-dodging as a result.
