Israel is one step closer to deporting Todros Grynhaus, an alleged British haredi pedophile after an Israeli court ruled that the state can deport rather than extradite suspected criminals who entered Israel illegally, The JC reported.
Grynhaus illegally fled Britain last year with his wife and children, using a false passport to escape after he was charged with seven sexual assaults on children.
He was arrested in Jerusalem in February.
Grynhaus hired two Israeli legal teams to fight deportation and extradition, and applied for Israeli citizenship under the Israel’s Law of Return.
But late last year, Israel’s High Court of Justice issued what is being call a landmark decision denying Grynhaus an Israeli citizenship, effectively barring other Jewish sex offenders from using the Law of Return to gain Israeli citizenship.
Recently, without telling the African state of Gambia that Grynhaus was an alleged pedophile who had jumped bail in Britain, Grynhaus’ attorneys tried to convince Gambia to grant Grynhaus a visa. Gambia declined once it found out who Grynhaus really is.
The extradition process can take up to two years, and Grynhaus could be released from prison during it. So Grynhaus's attorneys tried to force Britain to try to extradite Grynhaus rather than have Israel deport him.
But now District Court Judge Dana Marshak-Marom has ruled that Grynhaus's "failed efforts" to avoid being returned to Britain strengthens Israel's legal authority to deport him – and other suspected foreign criminals, as well.
"Without such [legal] interpretation it would encourage criminals from across the world to use Israel as a place of refuge as [Grynhaus] has attempted to do," Marshak-Marom said.
Grynhaus can still launch one final appeal before Israel can deport him.
