A Jerusalem court has approved the sale of the right-wing Hebrew language newspaper Makor Rishon and the Hebrew language NRG news website to Israel Hayom, the free daily newspaper owned by billionaire Sheldon Adelson, the JTA reported.
Adelson reportedly bid almost $5 million altogether for Makor Rishon, NRG and the now-defunct Hebrew language daily newspaper Ma’ariv. The deal includes a stipulation that Israel Hayom will employ 95% of Makor Rishon and NRG employees for at least one year.
Israel Hayom launched in 2007 and is now the highest daily circulation newspaper in Israel.
Adelson is a right wing supporter of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the right wing of America’s Republican Party.
“Israel Hayom is Pravda, it’s the mouthpiece of one man – the prime minister. At every point where there was a contradiction between the national interest and the prime minister, the paper always preferred the prime minister,” Israel’s Economy Minister Naftali Bennett, who is also Israel’s Diaspora and Religious Services minister and who heads the right wing Zionist Orthodox HaBayit HaYehudi Party reportedly said yesterday.
Israel’s Anti-Trust Authority still needs to approve the sale.
