Hundreds Of Haredim Stage Anti-Government Anti-Draft Riots, Protests Across Israel

Hundreds if not thousands of haredim from the Ashkenazi haredi rebel faction headed by Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach rioted and staged demonstrations tonight in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh, Modi’in Ilit, Elad, Petah Tikva, Dimona, Ofakim, near the IDF Prison 6 in Atlit, Kirayt Gat and Ashdod to protest the arrest of a haredi yeshiva student who dodged the draft, Israeli media reported.
A brief rundown:
• Jerusalem. Dozens of haredim reportedly stoned vehicles and set fire to trash cans near the Bar Ilan junction. Police used water cannon to disperse the rioters. One haredi rioter was arrested. Haredim also tried to block the road beneath the String Bridge at the entrance to Jerusalem.
• Kirayt Gat. Three haredim were arrested after they allegedly tried to set tires on fire and block a road.
• Highway 4 near Bnei Brak and Givat Shmuel. Hundreds of demonstrators attempted to block Highway 4.
• A main road into Ashdod was briefly blocked.
Most of the protests had reportedly been dispersed by police by 9 p.m. Israel time.
Overall, only four arrests have been reported.
