Yaakov Yisrael Paz, the haredi yeshiva student who was arrested for draft dodging, was released this morning after serving the standard sentence of 10 days in an IDF prison, Yeshiva World reported.
On release, Paz was met by dozens of haredim who cheered him and carried him on their shoulders
As a reward for draft dodging, Paz was also given a private meeting with haredi rebel faction leader Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach where Paz’s draft dodging was celebrated with a toast.
Not one to be modest, Paz told Army Radio that “sitting in jail for God and the continuation of the chain from Abraham Our Father and the Holy Torah is nothing less than a sanctification of God’s name.…I am a student of Rabbi Auerbach and I will continue to adhere to his words”.
Army Radio: Is there an argument between Rabbi Auerbach and [the haredi] rabbis in Bnei Brak [i.e., Rabbi Ahron Leib Steinman’s ‘mainstream’ haredi faction]?
Paz: I am 18. Who am I to even begin to question arguments between leading haredi rabbis? I have my rabbi and my job is to follow to his words.
Army Radio: How was the day-to-day experience in jail?
Paz: Actually, it was great because it was totally a sanctification of God’s name, and with this constant awareness, it is fine.
Army Radio: Enough with the slogans! How was it to spend time in an IDF jail?
Paz: You don’t get it! It isn’t slogans! It is my belief, our belief. We were 22 in my room and I earned the respect of all. They admired me for sticking with my beliefs. Actually the jail time was uplifting and inspiring. We prayed every day and we had a minyan, too. You just do not understand! You will not break us! We are stronger than you and them. We have rabbis and Torah on our side. We will not serve [in the IDF]! We will not fold! And we will continue adhering to the words of our great rabbis, not the IDF!
