Rabbi Meir Michel Abehsera, a pioneer of the modern day ba'al teshuva movement who is both a member of the Abehsera family of Sefardi kabbalists and hasid of the late Chabad-Lubavitch Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Scheerson, is reportedly critically ill. Meir is arguably the most honest of all "kiruv" rabbis and activists and is famous for never asking non-Orthodox Jews to do anything Orthodox but never compromising in his own Orthodoxy. That approach – and a completely open door policy – helped several hundred (or even more) non-Orthodox Jews become Orthodox, some through Chabad, some not.
The following email was sent this morning by a son of Rabbi Meir Michel Abehsera, perhaps best known for his works on macrobiotics and other forms of alternative medicine and herbalism. I'm told the illness is longstanding and that Meir is in a very precarious situation:
My father hasn't been well and is now in critical condition
Please put in a prayer for him if you have a moment. His name is Meir Nissim ben Rachel.
Blessings to all of you.
