Rabbi Dov Halbertal, an attorney who is a former bureau chief of Israel’s state haredi-controlled Chief Rabbinate, was a close confidant of the late haredi supreme leader Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyahiv.
Halbertal was interviewed on Galei Yisrael radio earlier this week, and told his startled host that Finance Minister Yair Lapid – demonized by haredi leaders and haredi politicians for pushing the issue of drafting haredim and for pushing for economic reforms that end special preferences for haredim – would soon be assassinated by a haredi just like Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995.
And, Arutz Sheva reported, Halbertal was not simply voicing his own opinion.
“There's going to be a new Rabin murder. Yair Lapid will be murdered by a haredi,” Halbertal said.
The show's host called Halbertal’s statement "explosive" and said the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security service) might meet Halbertal outside the studio to question Halbertal over it.
"I don't know about Shin Bet,” Halbertal reportedly responded. “I’m just saying what they told me. Someone to whom I ascribe importance tells me we aren't far from that. The murder of Lapid will be the next Rabin murder in line."
Haredi rabbinic and political leaders have called for a "fight to the death" against the government over the raft bill and cuts to haredi yeshivas and have made Lapid the focal point of their anger.
Earlier this month, MK Rabbi Yaakov Asher of the Ashkenazi haredi United Torah Judaism Party Elyashiv once controlled warned of growing haredi extremism.
“[There has been a] long period of pushing the haredim to the wall that will bring extremism. This is how the [‘Zionist Orthodox] hilltop youth' phenomenon [i.e., price tag attacks against the IDF and against non-Jewish targets like Palestinian farmers, mosques and churches] started, when the right-wing felt pushed to the wall."
In January, Halbertal told Kol Yisrael Radio that "on one side, we have Yair Lapid, who represents the State of Tel Aviv that elected him alongside with [the head of the Zionist Orthodox HaBayit HaYehudi Party, Economy, Trade, Diaspora and Religious Services Minister] Naftali Bennett, Lapid’s mirror image. On the other side we have the haredim and Jerusalem. Now, the real question is what identity do we wish to see for the future of the state of Israel?"
Halbertal now believes that future will be written in with Lapid’s blood.
