Regarding: The Status of Ex-Haredim in Pre-University Programs
In a meeting by the steering committee on pre-university programs held on Wednesday, 22 Jan 14, we discussed the status of ex-Haredim who wish to participate in these programs at higher education institutions.
The committee clarified that that the distinction between students who are eligible for the Haredi preparatory programs rests solely on the following definition:
· Men: the student studied (between class 9 and 12) in an institution of unique cultural character as defined by law in 2008, or in a Haredi affiliated institution under the supervision of the Department of Education.
· Women: the student studied (between class 9 and 12) in a Haredi affiliated institution under the supervision of the Department of Education.
This definition is used because of the gap in knowledge by those who learned in institutions where core studies are not provided. In light of this, because the educational background of ex-Haredim is identical to the background of Haredi students, one must not discriminate in the provision of support between the two groups. Therefore, it is clear that these [ex-haredi] students are entitled to the same (financial) aid and prerequisite entry conditions.
In addition, the committee has decided that the introductory courses for men, taken before beginning pre-university programs, will be extended to 4.5 months (from the current 3 months) due to the extent of the gap in knowledge of this group.
