IDF Soldier Threatened With Eviction – From Entire Haredi City

A haredi man from the haredi city of Elad has been threatened with eviction from the entire city, simply because he is an IDF soldier, Yeshiva World reported based on a report in Walla News.
The soldier was reportedly warned several times by a local neighborhood committee (most probably a modesty squad) that he cannot travel to and from his family’s home wearing his uniform.
The soldier continued to do so, however, in part because he must do under IDF regulations.
So the haredi neighborhood committee ordered him to voluntarily leave the neighborhood within two weeks. If he does not, the haredi committee will force his landlord to invalidate his lease and he will be evicted from his home and from the entire city.
Elad’s city government reportedly claims to be unaware of the situation but said it would know how to respond if and when it is informed.
The IDF condemned the harassment of this haredi soldier and of other haredi soldiers who have faced increasing harassment over the past year as the issue of a universal haredi draft has been in the national spotlight.
“The IDF denounces and condemns any attempt to harm its soldiers who work day and night in defense of the country,” the IDF’s spokesman’s office reportedly said in a statement.
Although they have repeatedly vowed to track down and arrest haredim who harass haredi IDF soldiers, the government, Israel Police and the IDF have essentially tracked down and arrested no one, and several haredim who were arrested for rioting against police in Mea Shearim – but not for assaulting a haredi IDF soldier minutes before that – all received extremely light sentences.
