Haredim Claim Financial Troubles At Hadassah Hospital Are God’s Punishment For “Starving Mother” Case

The Hadassah Medical Organization is in a deep financial crisis, in significant part due to the massive hit Hadassah took in the US during the Bernard Madoff scandal.
As the US-based Hadassah women’s organization has tried to recover from those staggering losses, its ability to help the hospitals and clinics it funds in Israel was reduced. At the same time, medical and personnel costs in Israel rose and the worldwide economic crisis hurt fundraising in the US and in other diaspora communities.
This downward spiral has led to a doctors and nurses strike that has seen Hadassah’s two Jerusalem hospitals go on Shabbat schedules with only emergency medical needs being met.
Enter haredim who are still angered that several years ago Hadassah caught Mea Shearim’s “starving mother,” a woman who was starving her toddler son, red handed on hidden camera video removing the little boy’s feeding tube.
That prompted a years-long criminal court case against the mother, who was diagnosed with Munchausen by Proxy, a psychological disorder in which a parent (or other caregiver) intentionally sickens or injures her child to gain sympathy and attention for herself. Her children were removed from her care and her visitation with them was closely supervised and controlled.
Mea Shearim haredim would have none of it and launched a series of extremely violent riots against Hadassah, the court and any government office they could reach. Haredim also organized a boycott of Hadassah’s two hospitals that is still technically in place.
In December after years of delay, a Jerusalem court finally sentenced the “starving mother” to a no prison sentence. It did so even though the prosecution showed she had broken the conditions of her probation. The mother arrived at the court hearing in wheelchair.
Haredim were quick to claim victory and lashed out at Hadassah and the courts, claiming the no prison sentence “vindicated” the mother – although it did nothing of the kind.
Now these haredim are claiming that Hadassah Medical Organization’s current severe financial problems are ‘mida k’neged mida’ (direct cause and effect) for Hadassah’s “misbehavior” in the “starving mother” case.
