Woman Dies When Nursing Home In Haredi City Refuses To Call Doctor On Shabbat

In February 2012, an 85-year-old woman in a nursing home in the haredi city of Bnei Brak was denied needed emergency medical care because nursing home staff did not want to violate Shabbat laws.
The woman died four days later.
According to Yeshiva World, the Israeli news website MyNet broke the story based on a lawsuit filed by the woman’s family against the facility.
The woman, who had lived in the nursing home since 2001, became visibly ill and her breathing was labored. Her family asked the nurse to call the facility’s doctor, the lawsuit says, but the nurse allegedly refused, citing Shabbat as an excuse.
“Your mother will be the first to be seen by the doctor when he arrives on Sunday morning…” the nurse allegedly said, “when the doctor returns from his day off – Shabbat.”
After Shabbat ended, nursing staff realized the woman’s condition had become critical and had her transported to Beilinson Hospital – where she died four days later.
