The financial foundation of the HaPeles newspaper, started about a year ago by followers Ashkenazi haredi rebel leader Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach, is reportedly crumbling.
Subscribers have been called and asked to voluntarily increase their monthly subscription fees, Yeshiva World reported. The HaPeles callers are reportedly telling subscribers that whatever amount of money they add to their base subscription fee can be officially counted as tzedaka (charity) and as part of each subscriber’s mandatory yearly ma’aser (tithe) as commanded in the Torah.
An urgent gathering was scheduled to be held last night in Jerusalem to decide the future of the newspaper.
