Two board members of the iconic Bialystoker Synagogue on Manhattan’s Lower East Side are suing the board’s president, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Shlomo Hagler, over the sale of an L-shaped lot adjoining the Orthodox synagogue that has been owned by the congregation since 1987, the New York Post reported.
Baruch Singer and Lenny Greher reportedly say that Hagler; the Bialystoker’s rabbi, Zvi Romm; and the chairman of its housing fund are prohibited by an April 2012 beit din (Orthodox Jewish rabbinical court) ruling from selling the property.
The suit also reportedly follows the sale by the synagogue of a 127-unit affordable-housing building in January for $28 million.
Among the congregation’s notable members are Speaker of the New York State Assembly Sheldon Silver and indicted former Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty CEO William E. Rapfogel.
