Rabbi Menachem (Manny) Edry – a well-known former Israeli crime boss who had repented in prison, become a haredi rabbi and later opened his own yeshiva, Yeshivat Ben Ish Hai, for fellow penitents – ejected one of those fellow penitents from his yeshiva after learning the penitent was still involved in crime and was, in fact, an escaped convict. When the ejected student turned violent, Edry did not call police – instead, he set up an ambush and shot the escaped convict.

A Sefardi haredi ba’al teshuva rosh yeshiva and his close friend were sentenced to stiff prison terms this morning after being convicted of conspiracy to commit a crime, assault with aggravating circumstances, illegal weapons possession, and firing a gun in a residential area, Arutz Sheva reported.
The sentence was handed down by Jerusalem District Court Judge Rafi Carmel.
In 2010, Rabbi Menachem (Manny) Edry (also spelled Edri) – a well-known former Israeli crime boss who had repented in prison, become a haredi rabbi and later opened his own yeshiva, Yeshivat Ben Ish Hai, for fellow penitents – ejected one of those fellow penitents from his yeshiva after learning from a different student that the penitent was still involved in crime and was, in fact, an escaped convict.
Angered by his expulsion, the escaped convict returned to the yeshiva not long afterward with a group of friends and assaulted several students as he tried to find the student who had told Edry the truth about him.
Days after the assaults, Edry phoned the escaped criminal and asked him to come to the yeshiva for a meeting. Edry and Edry’s friend, Yitzchak Zohar, waited for on a motorcycle, armed with a gun.
When the escaped criminal arrived, Edry and Zohar argued with him and the incident escalated, finally ending when Edry fired his gun at escaped criminal’s legs, wounding him. Edry then beat the escaped criminal and threatened him.
Edry and Zohar denied the charges against them, but the court found their purported alibis wanting.
Edry was sentenced to 5 years in prison while Zohar got 4 1/2 years.
