The number of haredim police will be able to absorb is limited to no more than 2,200, Perlman said, because there are a limited number of police units that do not operate on Shabbat, and because haredim refuse to share a squad cars with female police officers.

National Civil Service Administration head Sar Shalom Jerby told the Knesset’s Shaked Committee yesterday that to date, 3,550 haredim have completed national civilian service while 1,442 are currently in national service programs, Israel HaYom reported.
But Jerby told the committee that 438 haredim had to be removed from the program and drafted into the military because they did not fulfill their requirements of their program duties.
Jerby also said that:
• 55% in national service volunteer in municipal or public service jobs,
• 30% work within the haredi sector,
• 15% work in organizations that are run by haredim but which serve the general population, as well.
A yeshiva student who receives an exemption from military service cannot join national civilian service, Jerby noted. (However, doing national civilian service opens up a range of employment opportunities and government subsidies that might not otherwise be available.)
Israel Police Commander Alex Perlman told the committee that haredi national civilian service volunteers had been successfully integrated into traffic department police units.
But the number of haredim police will be able to absorb is limited to no more than 2,200, Perlman said, because there are a limited number of police units that do not operate on Shabbat, and because haredim refuse to share a squad cars with female police officers.
