Israel’s haredi former Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona Metzger, was reportedly released to restrictive house arrest this morning amid threats made against the key witness against him.
The former chief rabbi is accused of fraud, money laundering, breach of public trust, obstruction of justice and tax fraud for allegedly taking bribes and embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from charities.
The terms of his restrictive house arrest bar Metzger from having contact with anyone involved in the case and from leaving the country. He also had to post a large amount of bail.
The key witness against Metzger was forced to flee his apartment – and, perhaps, Israel entirely – after graffiti threatening him and his family was painted there. The witness was reportedly seen by media leaving his home yesterday carrying large suitcases and was thought to be fleeing Israel for safety elsewhere, although the witness denied any plans to leave Israel.
The evidence against Metzger is reportedly overwhelming and includes a recording of Metzger asking the key witness against him to take the fall for Metzger's crimes.
