Yitzhak Bergel, the Neturei-Karta-linked man who allegedly tried to spy against Israel for Iran may be about to get a plea deal that reportedly could see him serve four years or less in prison.
The Meah Shearim father of six children was arrested in July, indicted and imprisoned after he contacted Iranian diplomatic officials outside Israel and offered to spy for them.
The state is reportedly offering Bergel a deal that would see him sentenced to 4 years in prison. Bergel’s attorney reportedly wants the prison term reduced to 3 1/2 years, Walla News reportedly wrote yesterday. The deal was apparently sparked by a psychiatric evaluation of Bergel.
Bergel is now reportedly out of solitary confinement – a sign that the government does not believe that he poses a significant security threat.
Bergel also allegedly told law enforcement after his arrest that spying for Iran was not his first anti-Israel activity of note.
“Back in 1987 when I was a 24-year-old single man, before I was frum [haredi], I traveled to Holland and from there to Belgium. In Belgium I visited the Libyan Embassy and asked if I can migrate to Libya,” Bergel reportedly said.
During questioning, Bergel allegedly confessed, telling security officials that he spied for Iran “out of a hatred for the state of Israel and in exchange for financial compensation."
