A United Synagogue Orthodox congregation in Golders Green, London has been attacked by a haredi leader for allowing women to touch Torah scrolls, The JC reported.
Under the new practice, the Torah is taken out of the ark by a man as usual in Orthodoxy. But the scroll is reportedly handed to a woman who takes it to the women’s section to allow women to kiss it. She then returns it to the men’s section so it can be read as usual by the men.
Rabbi Ephraim Padwa, the chief rabbi of the haredi Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations, called the Golders Green United Synagogue’s innovation “Reform-influenced” and wrote that “breaches of this nature [come from] from the influence of the Reform.”
Padwa was secretly videotaped early this year telling an alleged child sex abuse victim that it is forbidden to report the crimes done to him to police.
