A haredi girls youth movement has reportedly seen its government funding withheld through the end of the year due to allegations that it illegally inflated both the number of branches it has and the services it provides in order to illegally obtain increased government funding, Ha'aretz reported.
Bnot Batya is reportedly the largest haredi youth movement and the fourth largest youth movement in the country after the Israel Scouts, the Labor-affiliated Hano’ar Ha’oved Vehalomed and the Zionist Orthodox Bnei Akiva.
The Education Ministry reportedly said it received complaints about Bnot Batya’s alleged thefts from 10 other youth movements.
An Education Ministry investigation of 20 Bnot Batya branches reportedly found that 15 of them had no activities at all at the time of the inspection by the ministry. In some of those cases, ministry inspectors were reportedly told the activities took place on a different day, while in other cases there was reportedly no evidence of activities ever took place at the supposed Bnot Batya branches which are located in religious schools and community centers. In still other locations staff members of the host school or community center told Education Ministry inspectors that they were unaware of “any Bnot Batya activities taking place there,” Ha’aretz reported.
Minutes from last week's meeting of the Education Ministry committee that oversees youth movement funding reportedly show that the number of reported Bnot Batya branches plummeted from 306 at the start of the year to only 148 in October.
The day after that meeting, the list was reportedly given by the ministry to to the head of Bnot Batya for confirmation. Bnot Batya reportedly amended the list, reporting a total of only 101 branches.
Bnot Batya has reportedly been summoned to a Ministry of Education hearing that will determine its funding for 2014 in light of the irregularities.
Bnot Batya has reportedly not yet responded to that hearing notice.
