“In a conversation with Rabbi Ifergan’s sister Bruriya, I told her that there are rumors that we want to harm the rabbi. ‘God forbid that I would ever harm a rabbi,’ [I told her]. We believe in God. We would never do such a thing,” the kipa-wearing alleged mobster said.

Yoram Abergel, the well-known Sefardi haredi rabbi from Netivot who was arrested for extortion and attempted election fraud Sunday morning as he was about to board a flight to China, allegedly committed more serious crime than preliminary reports showed.
Abergel allegedly took out a hit on a gabbi (assistant) of the X-Ray Rabbi, Yaakov Ifergan as part of a conspiracy with Israeli organized crime boss Shalom Domrani to force Ifergan to support their candidate for mayor of Netivot.
At his arraignment this morning, Domrani – who wears a kipa and who is a student of both Abergel and Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto – reportedly told the court Sunday he would never murder a rabbi.
“In a conversation with Rabbi Ifergan’s sister Bruriya, I told her that there are rumors that we want to harm the rabbi. ‘God forbid that I would ever harm a rabbi,’ [I told her]. We believe in God. We would never do such a thing,” Domrani reportedly said.
Abergel has an alleged history of violence against dissenters and against women he allegedly sexually harassed or assaulted.
He founded a new type of Sefardi haredi Judaism which is a blend of the Chabad and Breslov hasidic movements.
According to Forbes, Abergel is the 8th richest rabbi in Israel with a net worth of 35 million shekels ($9.9 million).
Ifergan is the country’s 5th richest rabbi and is worth 90 million NIS ($25.5 million).
Pinto – who is himself under criminal investigation for embezzlement, bribery, money laundering and other crimes in an unrelated case and who is likely to be indicted soon – is the country’s 6th richest rabbi with a net worth of 75 million NIS ($21.2 million).
Abergel was reportedly on his way to a Chabad House in China when he was arrested. His remand was extended until Wednesday.
Domrani’s remand was extended for a full week.
