Two married haredi yeshiva students appeared in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court Monday on smuggling charges.
The pair was arrested by customs inspectors in Ben Gurion International Airport after they were allegedly discovered to be smuggling 3,460 packs of cigarettes into the country from the Ukraine, Yeshiva World reported.
The two – both reportedly students of the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak – had purportedly gone to the Ukraine to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.
They are each reportedly charged with trying to avoid paying 71,000 NIS (just over $20,000) in customs charges.
They were released with restrictions that include bail of 1,500 NIS ($427) each and a third party guarantee of 5,000 NIS ($1,422) each.
The court also forbade the pair from leaving Israel until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings against them.
