“[Rabbi Martin “Mordechai” Wolmark] is a well-respected figure in the Jewish community, and he’s somebody that’s respected not just because he married into a wealthy family. He’s considered a rabbi of caliber,” Rabbi David Zwiebel of the haredi umbrella organization Agudath Israel of America told the Journal News.
The 55-year-old Wolmark was arrested in a get (Jewish divorce) extortion scheme Wednesday night with 9 other men – including Rabbi Mendel Epstein, who headed the scheme with Wolmark.
Wolmark – who is the head of Yeshiva Shaarei Torah in Monsey, founded by former OU Kosher head Rabbi Berel Wein – is the son-in-law of Zev Wolfson, one of the very top philanthropists in recent history. Wolfson funded kiruv (missionary outreach) programs aimed at secular Jews and a variety of Orthodox causes before passing away last year.
Meanwhile, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told the Asbury Park Press that more arrests in the scheme are highly likely and will follow “like dominoes."
