Earlier today, a New York State appellate court panel rejected a lawsuit brought by the town board of Monroe, New York on behalf of a hasidic developer and the Satmar Village of Kiryas Joel. The suit sought to transfer 14 acres of Woodbury, New York to Monroe. Doing so would have allowed significantly higher population density for the land which its owner, developer Ziggy Brach, wants to develop as housing for Kiryas Joel’s Satmar residents.

Kiryas Joel is located within Monroe.
The four judges dismissed the case on procedural grounds, the Times Herald-Record reported, ruling that Brach and Kiryas Joel had to first challenge Woodbury in state Supreme Court before Monroe could seek an appellate court ruling. Brach and Kiryas Joel can therefore continue to try to transfer the land to Kiryas Joel and will probably do so.
