More than six thousand families from across Israel reportedly participated in Shabbat meals this weekend hosted by Orthodox families. The attendees were not Orthodox or were ba’al teshuvas (BTs; newly Orthodox).
Beit Hillel, a Zionist Orthodox rabbinical association, sponsored the event in an attempt to create a bridge between Orthodox and secular Israelis, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Minister of Education Rabbi Shai Piron (Yesh Atid), Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau, former chairman of the Jewish Agency Ze’ev Bielski, Cabinet Minister Silvan Shalom (Likud), and MKs Zahava Galon (Meretz), Aliza Lavie and Adi Kol (Yesh Atid), and Zvulun Kalfa (HaBayit HaYehudi) were among those who attended.
“Shabbat is a big common denominator and it is possible to build bridges and meeting points between us all. This one of the most powerful ways to enhance the unity of the nation,” Beit Hillel’s chairman, Rabbi Meir Nehorai, reportedly said.
Beit Hillel plans to this an annual event.
