Four right wing Jewish nationalists were reportedly arrested today when they were caught red handed smashing headstones in a Christian cemetery on Mount of Zion in Jerusalem.
Two of the men are settlers from the West Bank, the Jerusalem Post reported.
The men, who range in age from 17- to 26-years-old, threw concrete blocks at tombstones, some of which date reportedly back about 100 years, damaging 15 of them before they were stopped by police. Many of the headstones had their stone crosses broken off.
"Two of the men are known Hilltop Youth activists," police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld reportedly said. He told the AFP that the crime was either "nationalistic" or a "hate crime."
The Hilltop Youth are a notorious group of Jewish West Bank settlers and settler sympathizers accused by the government of vandalizing and attempting to burn down a number of mosques, monasteries and churches over the past few years in what the Hilltop Youth call “price tag” attacks. In one notorious attack, "Jesus is a monkey" was painted on and other vandalism was done to a monastery.
