A convicted haredi sex offender who fled to Canada after his conviction but before being sentenced has finally been extradited to Israel, Ynet reported.
Haim Cohen landed at Ben Gurion International Airport today accompanied by Israeli police.
In 2011, Israel police received information that eventually led them to Cohen and an international arrest warrant was issued.
Cohen was convicted of rape, indecent assault and sodomy of a 14-year-old girl in 2003 but fled Israel with his family. He was finally found in Canada five months ago and was arrested.
However, Israel has been much less cooperative with extradition requests for pedophiles and other sex offenders who have fled to Israel.
In one notorious case, Israel stalled the extradition of alleged serial child rapist Avrohom Mondrowitz for almost 25 years, with the High Court of Justice eventually ruling that too much time had passed between Mondrowitz’s indictment in Brooklyn in the mid-1980s and his proposed extradition and trial, Mondrowitz lived openly in israel during all but a few weeks of those decades while Israel’s courts and politicians blocked extradition requests from the US.
Mondrowitz is a member of a powerful and wealthy Gur hasidic family. The various rebbes of Gur (also known as Ger) controlled roughly half of the Ashkenazi haredi United Torah Judaism political party and had the power to topple governments.
