Sefardi haredi Chief Rabbi of Israel Yitzchak Yosef reportedly told El Al’s CEO Eliezer Shkedy that it is better for a Jew to pray alone rather than trying to make a minyan (prayer quorum) on a plane during a flight.
Yosef noted that his father, Sefardi haredi leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, prays alone when he flies.
Many Orthodox and haredi passengers do try to make minyans on flights, disturbing other passengers, interfering with the plane’s flight attendants and, sometimes, causing safety concerns.
Yosef reportedly wrote that passengers who want to pray during a flight should properly do so alone and at their assigned seats – especially if organizing a minyan could disturb sleeping elderly or children.
