Commenting on the steep cuts in government social services and welfare programs that have been the staple of haredi life for decades, the push by the government to compel haredi schools to teach math and other secular subjects, and the looming haredi draft, a prominent haredi community activist has called on haredim to consider separating from the State of Israel, Yeshiva World reported.
Equating the situation for haredim in Israel today to the situation of Jews in Germany in the years leading up to World War Two, haredi community activist/journalist/PR man Dudi Zilbershlag reportedly told the Israeli haredi news website Kikar HaShabbat that it may be time for haredim to stop taking money from the government and instead go it alone.
“It is entirely possible that we must build our own system. Perhaps we should stop receiving services from non-haredi agencies and build our own [agencies and infrastructure instead]. No one calculates how much Value Added Tax we pay and the little we receive in return compared to the non-haredi community. We do not [benefit from] funding for theater, sports and culture along with the other astronomical funds spent for these things,” Zilbershlag reportedly said.
In the past few months, the haredi newspapers Hamodia and Yated Ne’eman have both printed pieces by other haredim pushing the same concept, which essentially would see haredim refusing to pay any taxes to the Government of Israel and instead set up their own independent ‘government’ which would collect its own taxes and fund its own schools and social programs.
