Four prominent Breslov Shuvu Banim leaders – including the son and grandson of Shuvu Banim’s troubled head, Rabbi Eliezer Berland – who were arrested eleven days ago for alleged money laundering, tax fraud and related crimes had their remands extended for five more days yesterday, Yeshiva World reported, and a fifth was released to house arrest. Two others were previously released.
Nachman Berland and his son Nosson will stay in jail until at least Wednesday. Meanwhile, Nachman’s father Eliezer Berland is currently a fugitive from justice who fled Israel after being accused by several women and girls of sexual abuse. He is currently living in Morocco and is reportedly afraid to fly to Uman, Ukraine for his annual Rosh HaShana pilgrimage to Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s grave because he fears he will be arrested and set back to Israel. In Morocco, Berland is protected by a wealthy Jewish man who is close to Morocco's king.
